5 Things Do After Your Brockville Root Canal Treatment

Important Post-Care Tips After Receiving A Root Canal Treatment in Brockville

If you're receiving root canal treatment in Brockville, it's because you have a tooth with nerve damage due to cavities or other physical problems. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair the nerve of a tooth - it simply has to be extracted, to prevent infections and other complications.
Root canals are nowhere near as unpleasant as popular culture suggests, but it is still a surgical procedure and full healing requires some after-care.  Here's what you can do to make the healing process go as smoothly as possible.

What to Do After Your Brockville Root Canal Treatment

1. Take all prescriptions as directed

Chances are, your dentist will prescribe some antibiotics as a preventative measure.  It's very important to take these exactly as directed.  You will be more vulnerable to oral infection for a few days after the procedure and taking the full course of antibiotics will greatly reduce the chances of this happening.

2. Keep the area clean

To further discourage infection, you should take special care to keep that part of your mouth clean.  Brush (gently) regularly and do plenty of mouth rinses to keep the tooth free of any particulate food matter which could decay and encourage infection.
However, you want to avoid antiseptic mouthwash, because it would hurt.

3. Monitor your pain levels

A root canal is not terribly painful, because the tooth's nerve has been removed.  What minor pain you do feel should be easily managed with over-the-counter pain killers, and this should subside within a day or two.  If pain continues longer than that, or if you'd consider the pain more than minor, you should contact your dentist to have it looked into.

4. Don't put pressure on the affected area

For a week or so after the root canal treatment, you should actively avoid putting pressure on that tooth.  Try not to chew on that side of your mouth and avoid clenching your teeth.  If you have problems with teeth grinding at night, you may want a mouth guard to avoid damage.

5. Stick to soft room-temperature foods

The tooth will be sensitive for a few days, so you won't want food that is excessively hot or cold.  In addition, avoid foods which are crunchy or sticky, because they can do damage to the operation site.
