IT'S TIME TO TOSS YOUR TOOTHBRUSH
Did you know that you shouldn’t be waiting for your toothbrush to appear dirty to throw it out? In fact, you should toss your toothbrush when you start to see wear on the bristles, which is about every three months, or sooner if you tend to have a heavy hand while brushing. You’ll know your toothbrush has had enough wear when the bristles start to part ways – a sure sign to move on. Of course, if you have children in your household, you should always check their toothbrushes more frequently, as they seem to need to be replaced sooner.
How do you know it’s just the bristles and it isn’t actually full of germs and food? Well, research has found that as long as your toothbrush is given time to dry after using it, it is safe. In order to allow it to dry properly, you should always rinse your toothbrush under the tap water after brushing and then let it air dry by storing it in an upright position.
Some people also choose to clean their toothbrush in between purchasing new ones. While there are many different ways to clean your toothbrush, some of the most common include the use of mouthwash or boiling water – items typically found around your house. There is no need to actually purchase a toothbrush sanitizer as it’s been proven they don’t have much of an effect. As well, avoid using the dishwasher or microwave; they will actually damage your brush rather than giving you that extra clean between purchases.
Whether you like to clean your toothbrush from time to time, or not, remember that replacing your toothbrush is actually based on the bristles parting anyways. To keep yourself on track so you remember it’s time for a new one, try changing it with every check-up (providing you see your dentist at least every six months) and then again between appointments. Or, try changing it with the seasons – a little gift to yourself. Either way, by maintaining a proper toothbrush and tossing it more frequently, you can maintain a healthier smile.
